Reallusion ships Headshot 1.0
Reallusion has released Headshot 1.0, a new plugin for Character Creator, its 3D character creation tool, designed to generate 3D heads from single source photos, complete with PBR textures
The plugin shipped alongside Character Creator 3.2, the latest update to the software.
An AI-driven tool for generating 3D head models from single source images
Headshot is pitched as a one-click tool for generating a 3D head model from a single source photograph of an actor, using AI techniques to fill in parts of the head not visible in the image.
Users can start from a range of readymade profiles representing typical head geometries for male, female and gender-neutral characters, and characters of different ethnic backgrounds.
The model can then be adjusted using Headshot Morph 1000+, a slider-driven system of morphs controlling the overall shape of the head, and of the individual facial features.
There are also presets for different skin types, including age and roughness; different patterns of facial hair; and different eye colours.
Auto mode for crowd characters and Pro mode for hero characters
Headshot’s Auto mode, intended for generating “mid-res crowd [characters]”, generates both the head mesh and 3D hair, both with 1,024 x 1,024px texture maps.
The output is designed to be used as is, but since Character Creator supports GoZ, the meshes can also be refined manually in ZBrush.
The Pro mode, intended for characters that will be seen in close-up, generates only the head mesh with 4,096 x 4,096px textures. Hair can be added separately from Character Creator’s library.
Map types generated include normal, AO, roughness, metallic, SSS and micro normal, making output compatible with the new Digital Human Shader in Character Creator 3.2.
The Pro mode also provides extra toolsets when refining the head model manually, including the option to display the source photo on a reference plane behind the asset.
There are also tools for reprojecting textures onto the model, to fix any alignment issues; and for masking out problem parts of the source image, such as facial hair.
Pricing and availability
Headshot 1.0 is available for Character Creator 3.2. It has an MSRP of $199, although at the time of posting, it is available at a launch discount.
Character Creator is available for 64-bit Windows 7+. The full Pipeline edition costs $199.
